Lip augmentation using dermal fillers can enhance lip shape and volume in a natural way if done using a proper technique and quality products. Lip enhancement is suitable for older patients who have lost lip volume from ageing as well as younger patients who want fuller lips.
The treatment typically takes between 10 to 15 minutes. The consultation will take longer and the numbing cream needs to be applied for a minimum of 20 minutes prior to the procedure.
Anywhere between 6 to 12 months depending on how quickly you body brakes down the hyaluronic acid.
Numbing cream is used and a dermal filler containing a local anaesthetic (lignocaine) is used to minimise any discomfort from the procedure.
Common side effects include bruising, swelling, redness and tenderness. These typically resolve in 3 to 5 days. Application of ice after the procedure can help to reduce swelling.
There is the possiblity of mild lip asymmetry after the bruising and swelling has settled. If this is the case it can be easily rectified with the addition of more filler in the areas required.
If you have previously sufferred from oral herpes simplex (cold sores) there is a chance that the procedure can cause reactivation of the oral herpes simplex virus and lead to an outbreak of cold sores. This can be discussed during the consulation as prophylactic antiviral therapy may be needed.
Other types of local reactions can occur but these are rare.
